Retail Nation: Department Stores and the Making of Modern Canada (Vancouver: UBC Press, 2011), by Donica Belisle

Date: Saturday November 5, 2011
Time: 12:00-4:00 PM
Location: Chapters on Whyte, Edmonton

Dr. Donica Belisle is an Assistant Professor of Women's and Gender Studies at Athabasca University. Her book, Retail Nation, is currently UBC Press' top seller. It examines Canada's transformation into a modern consumer society, during an era (1890-1940) when department stores such as Eaton's and the Bay ruled the shopping scene. Relations among customers, employees, and managers are investigated, as are department stores' advertisements and publicity strategies, together with critics' attempts to regulate, restrain, and destroy mass retail.
