Senior Focus: Guided Independent Study

AU at MRC: All Cluster B nursing courses
All other students: Professor approval required.

Precluded course: NURS 440 cannot be taken for credit if credit has already been obtained for NURS 490.

Overview

Students in NURS 440 engage in a guided independent learning experience with a health promotion focus. Students choose the project they will undertake following discussions with the course instructor. Following a guide, each student develops an individualized Learning Contract, outlining learning strategies to integrate professional nursing concepts, health promotion activities, and possibly teaching and/or research and/or management knowledge as well. Strategies are implemented following consultation with the course instructor and evaluated according to criteria set out in the Learning Contract.

Objectives

The primary objective in offering Nursing 440: Senior Focus: Guided Independent Study is to provide the student with the opportunity to investigate a particular area of interest in some depth. On completion of this course you should have

  • Compiled relevant information about a particular topic, with an emphasis on health promotion, for use in improving current or future nursing practice.

Determined for each student based on discussions with the course instructor and reflected in the course contract.

Evaluation

A Learning Contract and major scholarly paper are required from all students. All other assignments are negotiated by individual students with the course instructor, based on the nature and scope of the project chosen. All written assignments must follow APA Publication Manual, 5th edition (2001).

To receive credit for NURS 440, you must achieve an overall composite grade of at least “C-” (60 percent). The criteria for evaluation will be clearly specified in the contract negotiated by the student and course instructor.
