Introduction

Students may submit a request to include one or more 3-credit independent study course(s) as part of their Master of Health Studies (MHS) or Master of Nursing (MN) program. A one-page written proposal including several learning objectives, a study plan, and a minimum of two proposed assignments must be submitted to the MHST/NURS 695-697 Course Leader at least one month before the registration deadline for the desired session. Approval will be contingent on acceptability of the proposal and the availability of an appropriate supervisor.

Students may complete up to three independent study courses (9 credits) as part of their CNHS graduate program.

Please contact the Academic Student Advisor - Graduate Programs for contact information for the Course Leader.

Course Goals

An independent study course is intended to foster initiative in the student by determining his or her own learning needs. An independent study course will extend the student's learning beyond the available prescribed and elective courses, expanding understanding of an individualized topic of interest. The student will work with a faculty member to meet the learning objectives of the customized course.

An independent study course is not meant to act as a place to conduct original research requiring data collection.

Course Materials

There are no required textbooks for NURS 695-696-697. It is expected that students will consult reference materials, including textbooks, journals, and Internet resources for information directly related to their learning proposal.

Course Structure

MHST/NURS 695-697 are asynchronous, paced online courses. This means that there is no predetermined time when students must log in to complete course work. A Moodle workspace will be created in which the student and supervisor will communicate.

Course Outline

The student will develop a schedule/outline for completion of the course within the timeframe of the session, and in consultation with the supervisor.

Assessment Structure

The assessment structure for each independent study course is determined by the student in consultation with the course supervisor. As noted above, the assessment structure must include a minimum of two assignments.

Independent study courses are graded on a pass/fail basis.

Athabasca University reserves the right to amend course outlines occasionally and without notice. Courses offered by other delivery methods may vary from their individualized-study counterparts.
