Purpose

To outline the criteria and process through which the Award for Health and Safety Excellence (AHSE) is awarded.

Includes health, safety, wellness and environment

OHS: Occupational Health and Safety

OHSC:           Occupational Health and Safety Committee

Procedure:

 
1. Eligibility

 
 

All permanent, temporary or term employees of Athabasca University (AU).

2. Criteria

 
 

A Review Committee will consider nominations involving the employee(s) or team(s) fulfillment of the following criteria:

  • Leadership and excellence in the development and implementation of proactive and preventive HSE initiatives within AU.

  • Exemplary participation and commitment to HSE programs and legislatively mandated initiatives. 

  • Participation and commitment goes beyond the requirements of the employee(s) role, is proactive and preventive, and works toward continuous improvement in the areas of HSE.

  • A team’s overall performance and contribution must be identified however each team member’s integral role should also be demonstrated.

  • Qualifying for this award requires the nominee(s) to meet the highest of standards, as evaluated by a committee of their peers, thus there is no requirement or expectation to have a recipient for each award cycle.

  • An employee or team may be nominated each year.
3. Nominations

 
 

Nominations are to be made by completing the AHSE Nomination Form.  The form, which includes information and supporting documentation, is available at: AHSE Nomination Form (word).

  a. Nominator

   

Nominations must be made by an AU employee or student who knows the nominated employee or team and of their exemplary contribution and performance.

  b. Seconder

   

The nomination must be seconded by an AU employee or student from a department or faculty different than that of the nominator.  The Seconder must also know the staff member or team and of their exemplary contribution and performance.

NOTE: Nominators and Seconders may be involved in the nomination of only one nominee in any given year.

  c. Nominee

 
   

The nominated employee(s) or team(s) must agree to let their name(s) stand for consideration of the award and may, upon request, view the supporting documentation.

4. Timelines

 
 

Timelines will be established each year.  The OHSC commences the process by sending out a call for nominations in the spring of each year.

5. Selection Process

 
  a. The OHSC will coordinate and provide administrative support to the process.

  b. Review Committee

    i.

The Review Committee will be comprised of the following members:

  • Two OHSC employee representatives appointed by the OHS Committee.

  • Two OHSC employer representatives appointed by the OHS Committee.

  • One non-voting chair appointed by Human Resources.
    ii. The Review Committee will be formed each year prior to initiating the nomination process.

    iii. Review Committee members must resign from the selection committee if they become Nominees, Nominators, or Seconders. 

    iv. The Review Committee may seek further clarification through the nominator in regards to a nomination.

  c. The Review Committee reports directly to the President and will provide the award recipient recommendations, including a summary of the Committee’s deliberation and rationale.  The President may consult with the Review Committee prior to approving the final decision.
