Welcome!

Welcome to the web site of the Freedom of Information and Privacy Office at Athabasca University.

The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP) Act is provincial legislation that came into effect in October of 1995. In the fall of 1999, post-secondary institutions were added to the list of public bodies to which the FOIP Act applies. The FOIP Act has two main purposes:

  • To make public bodies more open and accountable by providing the public with the right of access to records, and
  • To protect personal information from unauthorized collection, use, or disclosure by public bodies.

This site contains information about the University's access to information and privacy protection strategies and initiatives. This site provides specific guidance to individuals wishing to access records held by the University. It also provides guidance for faculty and staff that collect, use and disclose personal information on behalf of the University in the course of their authorized activities. Additionally, the site enables anyone whose personal information is maintained by the University to learn more about what steps are taken to protect his or her privacy.

If you have any questions or concerns about the University's approach to providing access to information or protecting privacy, please contact Ledean Moysey, FOIP/Policy Coordinator, by telephone at (780) 675-6567 or email ledeanm@athabascau.ca.
