The following learning resources have been compiled to assist students enrolled in AU German courses or for general reference:
AU Library German Resources
English Grammar for Students of German, 4th edition. Cecile Zorach and Charlotte Melin. Ann Arbor, MI: The Olivia and Hill Press, 2001.
This short book is an excellent resource for students who feel they need to brush up on their English grammar to understand the German concepts they are learning.
German Dictionaries Resources
- canoonet: Deutsche Wörterbücher und Grammatik.
- Duden: A German to German dictionary.
- LEO: Deutsch-Englishes Wörterbuch.
German Grammar & Language Resources
- Wie geht’s?: The official site of the German202 and German203 textbook. Contains updates, self-assessment quizzes, and activities related to each chapter.
- Tools for German: Learning Objectives for Verbs: From the Language Research Centre at the University of Calgary. Uses animations and interactive exercises to explain verbs.
- Web German: Deutsch im Netz and Foreign Languages Online: Animated grammar exercises, audio enhanced vocabulary lessons, collections of German comics, and many links to sites in German speaking countries.
- A Guide to German Pronunciation by Paul Joyce (University of Exeter). Contains audio clips of German sounds, pronunciation guides for names, cities, and tongue twisters as well as the lyrics and music of a German rap song by the famous group die Fantastischen Vier.
- Deutsch perfekt: Einfach Deutsch lernen: A magazine for German students of all levels offering news, audio exercises, grammar and vocabulary tips, self assessments, and more.
Online Newspapers Resources
- Zeitung, News und Informationen: This search engine scans 50 German dailies.
- Hassler & Mair: Willkommen in der Welt der Zeitungen: German language newspapers.
Radio and TV Resources
- tagesschau.de: Aktuelle Nachrichten: The news site of ARD, Germany’s first public broadcaster. Daily news reports (entire programmes and individual stories) can be viewed by selecting “Alle Sendungen” from the “Multimedia” box on the left side of the page.
- Die Deutsche Welle: Some stories have video and audio.
- Die Deutsche Welle: Deutsch Aktuell: Daily, slowly spoken news reports complete with written scripts so you can read along while you listen.
- BR-online: Bayerischer Rundfunk: Weather and news in and around Munich.
- Schweizer Radio DRS: Nachrichten: Texts are read with a Swiss accent, sometimes in Schweizerdeutsch.
- 101.7 FM: Ethnic Radio in Edmonton: German programming from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
- 90.9 FM: Calgary’s Independent Radio: German programming from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. Saturdays.
- ZDF Mediathek: Startseite: Media archive of many of the programmes shown on ZDF, Germany’s second public broadcaster.
- ARD Radionet web page gives an overview and choice of every public radio station in Germany.
German Culture Resources
- The Goethe-Institut Inter Nationes is the largest organization for the promotion of the German language and culture. Their site is helpful for learners of German and Germanophiles. It contains many links to art, social issues, the media, education, science, and material for learning German. Available in German and English.
- Kaleidoskop, a prize-winning project of the Goethe-Institut showing aspects of daily life in Germany.
- News from Germany brought to you by the German Embassy in Washington D.C. Available in German or English.
- LeMO: Lebendiges virtuelles Museum Online: A cultural and political history of Germany from the 19th century through the twentieth century up to today.
